Interested in becoming a First Responder?
Update: 10 June 2011
Current applications to be a First Responder received are being processed by QAS. Further applications received will be placed on file.

The Samford First Responders provide immediate response to Triple-zero (000) emergency medical calls for help in the Samford and surrounding communities. We are a group of committed volunteers trained, equipped and supported within the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS), and we are looking for more people to join the team. We are responded to around 50 calls per month.

You will need to undertake training and a 6 month probationary period, and you must be able to be on call for a number of hours per month, and attend regular training and occasional ‘ride-along’ shifts on a QAS Ambulance.

It is very rewarding! You learn to be part of an enthusiastic team, helping out at medical emergencies in homes, road traffic accidents and anywhere where a member of your community may become injured or ill. Your confidence to deal with medical and emergency situations will increase dramatically, and the satisfaction in knowing you have helped a member of your community will be immeasurable.

The greatest need at present is for volunteers who are generally available to respond during the daytimes of Monday to Friday, although all are welcome to apply.

As well as living in the area, you will need an Apply First Aid (AFA) Certificate (previously known as Senior First Aid ), your availability, enthusiasm, a car and a (manual) drivers license. The QAS will upgrade your skills with training including Apply Advanced First Aid (AAFA) including CPR, Oxygen Therapy and Defibrillation. QAS selection conditions apply. Strong peer support and ongoing training is also provided, and a professional counselling service is available if required.

For more information please visit the QAS First Responder web site, or contact the Samford QAS Officer in Charge (Rob Lloyd) at Samford Ambulance Station, 21 Mt Glorious Road, Samford Village, phone (07) 3289 3804 or mobile 0434 189 363.
