Training & Competencies

First Responders are competent in:

• Advanced first aid and basic life support;
• Oxygen therapy;
• The use of a semi-automatic external defibrillator;
• QAS radio and telephone communication procedures;
• Familiarisation with the vehicles that comprise the local stations fleet;
• Lifting and loading techniques; and
• Use of Cervical Collars.

Our training includes regular 'Ride Along' shifts in QAS ambulances, attending genuine incidents. These are essential to consolidate, refresh and hone our skills in emergency incidents and first aid procedures, as well as bond our working relationship with our QAS colleagues.

Additional training is expected to be provided in:

• Knowledge of specified QAS Clinical Procedures;
• Kendrick Extrication Devise and Scoop Stretcher;
• QAS Ambulance Report Form & other specific documentation;
• Familiarisation with QAS vehicles; and
• Other procedures the QAS may from time to time deem appropriate.

Equipment

Each on-call First Responder is equipped with a QAS pager, mobile telephone, and portable radio for dispatch and communication with QAS. They also carry the following specialist first aid equipment to provide patient care:

• Oxy viva unit with OP airways;
• Automatic external defibrillator;
• Fully stocked first aid/trauma kit;
• Safety and personal protective equipment.

Samford First Responders are easily recognisable by their blue overalls with reflective tape, and in hazardous areas (eg motor vehicle accidents) may be wearing highly reflective safety over-vests.
